SA NATIONAL Championship 2025
In a historic and inspiring performance, Dániyal Matthews of Team Siata clinched the elite men’s title at the 2025 South African Road Championships on February 9, 2025. This victory not only marks Mathews as the first rider of colour to win this prestigious event but also signifies the first time a predominantly black team has secured the national championship, highlighting a transformative moment in South African cycling history. The championship unfolded over a challenging 165-kilometer course in Midvaal, Gauteng. Mathews completed the race in 3 hours, 45 minutes, and 28 seconds, narrowly edging out Casper Kruger of Team Honeycomb Pro Cycling , who finished with the same time, and Daniel Loubser, who crossed the line 28 seconds later. This triumph is particularly remarkable considering that just two weeks prior, Mathews suffered a crash at the Gauteng Provincial Championships. Demonstrating exceptional resilience and determination, he recovered swiftly to deliver a stellar performance at the nationals. Team Siata, based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to developing young, aspiring riders across various age categories, including Under 11 through to Elite. Founded by Team Principal Ibrahim Sharif, the academy aims to provide opportunities for diverse talent, emphasizing support, guidance, and structured training programs. Mathews’ journey with Team Siata has been marked by significant achievements. In 2024, he represented South Africa at the African Continental Track Cycling Championships in Cairo, Egypt, securing a silver medal in the Omnium event. Reflecting on his historic win, Mathews expressed profound gratitude towards his team and supporters. “This victory is not just mine but belongs to everyone who believed in me and supported my journey. Overcoming the setback at the Gauteng Provincials made this win even more meaningful. I’m proud to be part of Team Siata, an organization that truly touches hearts and changes lives.” Team Siata’s mission to foster inclusivity and develop world-class riders has been further validated by this landmark achievement
